Lent is a period of 40 days preceding Easter historically focused on fasting and penitence, and we start this season off with a solemn gathering called Ash Wednesday. In a culture obsessed with self-esteem, Ash Wednesday is a time to make an honest assessment of our wrongdoing through confession and lament.

Because confession is set within a larger narrative of God's great love and sacrifice for broken people, this gathering of lament allows us to acknowledge our error and still know that we can be accepted by a holy God.
